What is Change Management?

Having been in the Change space for a while now I am still bemused by how many interpretations there are for the various change roles and where roles sit within industries.

Should the change management team report into HR (P&C), the PMO or be there own CMO sitting under the CTO/CIO/COO/CEO/CCO (Chief Change Officer)? 😳

Are you doing org change, tech change or a bit of both? 🤔

Let’s not confuse Tech Change Management that is focused on people with the change requests that occur in a project and someone needs to manage these! Can’t tell you how many times someone starts talking to me on a project about a Change Request! 🫤

We have many associations/institutes/practices/orgs that are providing support and membership in the (people) change management space but there does not seem to be a coming together of everyone to agree on all of this fundamental stuff (technical term 🤪)!

Are we a profession that is simply going to be like the name suggests and constantly ‘change’ who we are and how we operate in order to meet the changing demands of industry or can we come together as a collective and start driving how business/corporates should be seeing the profession with a clear understanding of what to expect from us?

I am throwing out some pretty big challenges here, and I certainly do not have the answers, but surely we have reached a point as a collective that we are now well respected in what we do, and how we do it, to provide additional clarity to all those on the receiving end of our offering?

If this is something that is happening in the wider community then I am more than happy to be corrected on all of this and share what is going on. If not, then very keen to see the responses this elicits. 😉
