No I am not getting into user journeys and personas as if I was working on a project/program!
What would you look like if you had to draw a character of you in the Change Management space?
Below is a character I drew for myself about something completely unrelated but he has become my go to character when I think about my role in the Change space. He can take on so many different emotions which covers my world beautifully when it comes to what I generally face in the Change Management realm.
He is neither right or wrong in any situation but he does put a smile on my face and provide me with some perspective.
In Change Management we should never be surprised by things that happen because we are dealing with humans and every single one of them (us included) is totally unpredictable given they are going through all sorts of things as the change unfolds.
But we always seem to be surprised (look at my character again)!
If it is what we expect then we should take things in our stride a little better. Shouldn't we?
We work in a space that is completely unpredictable and yet we are expected to simply deal with it because it is what we do.
With the right tools, attitude, and some (human) help along the way we can remove some of the surprises but we can never eliminate them all.
How do you present this to your sponsors and stakeholders? Show them a character like this and start the conversation and see what happens. It may not be magical but it will certainly change perceptions and perspectives. Or just keep it to yourself and have something you can look at and have a chuckle as you are asked to get the train back on the track and the titanic heading in the right direction! 🤣
I've seen a few characters now (and books) when it comes to change such as 'Bad Change' by Peter & Gilbert, there is even the wonderful illustrations provided by Justin Balaski, along with many others, and I think they are all brilliant for taking us on a creative journey.
Create a character that you relate to and the journey becomes more personal and hopefully more relatable to all those you work with. Remember, I am not artist so just have a go!
